Queue management for TCP traffic over 3G links

چکیده
We propose a novel active queue management scheme tailored to the specific characteristics of third generation (3G) cellular networks. Such links are often the bottleneck for an endto-end connection and dedicated to one host. Taking advantage of these specific characteristics, we developed a queuing scheme that is simpler than popular Random Early Detection (RED) schemes. Despite its simplicity, our solution yields superior performance for 3G links in terms of high link utilization, low queuing delay, and high end-to-end throughput for TCP bulk data transfers. Our simulation results show a clear win over both conventional drop-tail queuing and also a comparable RED scheme.

Generating Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP Traffic Flows with TEACUP Testbed
HTTP-based video streaming has become popular in recent years, with Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP (DASH) emerging as an ISO/IEC standard for live and on-demand video streaming services. Netflix and YouTube employ DASH-like streaming strategies and account for more than 50% of North American traffic in 2015, representing a significant source of Internet traffic. Consumer video streams are...
متن کاملAnalysis of Active Queue Management
Active Queue Management (AQM) is intended to achieve high link utilization with a low queuing delay. Recent studies show that RED, one of the most well-known AQMs, is difficult to configure and does not provide significant performance gains given the complexity required for proper configuration. Recent variants of RED, such as Adaptive-RED are designed to provide more robust RED performance und...
متن کاملEnhancing the Performance of TCP over Satellite Links
Understanding the interaction between TCP and MAC layer protocols in satellite networks is critical to providing high levels of service to users. We separate our study of TCP and MAC layer protocols into two parts. We consider the problem of scheduling at bottleneck links and propose two new queue management algorithms. They are capable of offering higher levels of fairness as well as lower lat...
متن کاملPerformance Evaluation of AQM Schemes in Rate-Varying 3G Links
When TCP is carried over 3G links, overbuffering and buffer overflow at the RLC layer degrades its performance. AQM techniques at the RLC buffer can bring noticeable enhancements to TCP performance without introducing changes in 3G specifications. We show that the optimum parameter setting of AQM algorithms in RLC buffers is strongly related to the radio bearer rate, which can be changed dynami...
متن کاملFavourQueue: a Parameterless Active Queue Management to Speed Up Short TCP Flows (and others too!)
—This paper presents and analyses the implementation of a novel active queue management (AQM) named FavourQueue that aims to improve delay transfer of short lived TCP flows over a best-effort network. The idea is to dequeue in first packets that do not belong to a flow previously enqueued. The rationale is to mitigate the delay induced by long-lived TCP flows over the pace of short TCP data req...
